Gordon Ramsay voted caravan owners best celebrity friend

November 2008

Top chef Gordon Ramsay has been voted the celebrity that Brits would most like to take on a caravan holiday with them – and many caravan enthusiasts are keen to take revenge on caravan-hater Jeremy Clarkson by taking him along too.

With new figures suggesting that UK seaside and caravan holidays will boom in the next year, as Brits reel from the economic crunch, leading caravan insurer Towergate Bakers asked more than 2,000 Brits which celebrity they would most like to take on a caravan holiday with them to undertake the essential chores – cooking, cleaning, clearing up and emptying the septic tank.

  • Chef Heaven: Gordon Ramsay tops the poll 18%, followed by Ainsley Harriott 11%. Ramsay was a dominant choice for the under 25's, whilst Harriott won hands down with the over 50's.
  • Clarkson Come Back: Jeremy Clarkson was joint second choice (11%), but was a top choice in the South East – 14%. Following his uncomfortable Top Gear caravan holiday, many caravan owners seem to want to persuade him to give it another go.
  • Cleaner Caravans: Whilst men top the poll, celebrity cleaner Aggie McKenzie was the top female choice, more than twice as popular with women than men – 14% vs 5%. Other popular female choices included Davina McCall and Fern Britten (both 10%).
  • Golden Oldies: With younger people more likely to go on caravan holidays, the appeal of elderly celebrity helpers was low - Cliff Richard and Jimmy Savill both came bottom of the celebrity wish list.

Top 10 celebrity caravan chums:

1. Gordon Ramsay
2. Jeremy Clarkson
3. Ainsley Harriott
4. Aggie McKenzie
5. Davina McCall
6. Fern Britten
7. Helen Mirren
8. Sharon Osbourne
9. Steve Jones
10. Kim Woodburn

Paul Havenhand, spokesperson for Towergate Bakers commented, "With our research showing a boom in caravan and camping holidays for the year ahead, we thought it would be a bit of fun to see which celebrities Brits would like to take away with them on holiday to do the chores."

"Young families are the people driving the caravan boom and many remember the holidays they had as children on the British coast. Caravans have changed a lot however in the last 20 years and many people new to caravanning will be surprised how few chores there are to do, although the people we surveyed clearly want a break from cooking!"
