Fire warning for all caravan owners
11 May 2009
Fire fighters have urged caravan owners to apply the same home
fire safety measures to their mobile dwelling as they would a
house.
The advice follows a caravan fire in Besston, Nottingham,
earlier this month in which a woman died.
The warning comes as many caravan owners prepare to take to the
roads for the first time this year.
Station manager Craig Dooley said the risk of fire in a caravan
can sometimes be greater than in a permanent home.
He said: "People install smoke alarms in their homes but not in
their caravans, yet a caravan fire can be just as devastating."
"It's vital to have a smoke alarm fitted – and to make sure you
test it regularly."
"Additionally, all caravans should be fitted with a fire
distinguisher and blanket, so that if a cooking fire breaks out it
can be immediately dealt with."
Spokesperson for Towergate Bakers, Paul Havenhand says: "Fire
safety is so important and it is irrelevant whether it is in your
home or your caravan. Hopefully this will make people see how vital
it is to have a fire alarm and prevent devastating events like this
from happening again."
