Eight stolen caravans discovered
5 May 2009
Police have seized eight stolen caravans from a site in
Lancashire.
The serious and Organised Crime Unit discovered the caravans at
Leisure Lakes Caravan Park at Mere Brow. They are valued at more
than £100,000.
They had been stolen from across the UK, and sold on by thieves
to innocent members of the public who did not know they were
stolen, police said.
Last year officers seized 36 caravans in two operations in
Benidorm, Spain.
The raids are part of the same operation targeting caravan
thieves, but are not specifically linked, according to the
police.
A spokesman for Lancashire Constabulary's Serious and Organised
Crime squad said: "We urge anyone buying a second hand caravan to
inspect it the same way as they would when buying a car.
Potential purchasers are advised to familiarise themselves with
the Caravan Registration Identification Scheme (CRIS) and be wary
of sellers insisting on cash payments."
Spokesperson for Towergate Bakers, Paul Havenhand says:
"Security is important for all caravan owners to prevent events
like this from occurring. If any caravan owners or potential
caravan owners are unsure of what security they need, our informed
sales team are happy to help and answer your questions as best we
can."
