Tips and advice - Touring caravan insurance
Towergate Bakers have been providing touring caravan insurance
cover for over a quarter of a century, so we are well placed to
advise on the simple things you can do to reduce the risk of a
claim in the first place.
Some helpful tips
1. Whether you have spent £2,000 or £20,000 on your new touring
caravan, it is important to find the right insurance cover to suit
your needs. You should consider whether you will be towing abroad,
whether your car insurance covers you for towing, and if you have
the right driving accessories.
2. Security? Do you have the right security to stop your caravan
from being stolen? Security starts with a simple hitch lock or a
wheel clamp, ranging up to a tracking device or an axle wheel
locking mechanism. The tracking device will let you know the exact
location of your caravan should it ever get stolen.
3. Maintenance - the best way to get the most out of your
caravan for the longest period of time is to look after and
maintain it. Simply washing your caravan regularly will help
improve its appearance and by doing this you will notice any faults
or knocks that you otherwise may not have. Also consider where your
caravan is stored as this may impact upon your ability to keep your
caravan maintained.
4. Touring season is almost upon us but before you go out after
your break from caravanning, you will need to give your caravan a
thorough look over. Check tyre pressures, water and waste pipes,
and any other items that may have been affected by lack of use of
your caravan.
5. Planning ahead - if you know you are going away this can give
you time to organise everything you need, such as planning the most
ideal route - not necessarily always the motorway (and don’t always
trust your Sat Nav!). It also allows time to check your spare tyre,
or site arrival times so you that don’t arrive to find you are
unable to gain access and set-up.
6. Travelling abroad - if you are planning on taking your
caravan abroad you will need to check your insurance and how long
it covers you for outside of the UK. Also you might need to check
if your caravan does break down what happens with regards to
recovery. If you decide to travel further afield it is a good idea
to familiarise yourself with the local driving regulations e.g.
which side of the road you should be driving on, speed limits,
required vehicle accessories, road signs, toll roads, correct
currency etc.
7. Facilities on the park - when booking your destination it is
always worthwhile checking what facilities your park offers. Many
offer electrical hook-up and mains drainage as standard but this
does vary from park to park.
8. Be prepared - you might have booked your holiday expecting
fine weather for your whole trip. Be prepared by packing
waterproofs and identifying "wet-weather" attractions near to your
site.
9. Before setting-off - Ensure that everything is packed away
safely. Sharp corners and pot-holes can cause tins to fall out of
cupboards often damaging surfaces. Also, check that any roof lights
in your caravan are closed. Roof lights that get left open are
damaged very quickly and may cause damage to other people and their
property. This may result in the need to make an insurance claim
and the loss your no claims discount.
10. Last but not least have fun! Caravanning is a fantastic
experience which can be enjoyed with the whole family. Wherever you
go there will be places to visit and things to do so enjoy
yourselves and have fun!
